2006 Martin Luther King Jr.

Northern Michigan University Football Team members (l-r) Corbin Walker, Austin Hughes, and Arthur Scott went to Mrs. Enright and Mrs. Murphy’s 4th grade classes at Father Marquette Catholic School to read from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In January of 2006, the Martin Luther King, Jr. program provided biographies on the life of Dr. King to every 4th grade class in Marquette and Alger Counties. Those books (800 in all) will be kept in the classroom for use year after year. In addition, this year every 4th grade student in Marquette and Alger Counties were given a book on the Montgomery Bus Boycott that they could keep – another 800 books.

During the two weeks following the Martin Luther King holiday, volunteers from the community visited the 4th grade classes to read from the books and lead discussions on the life of Dr. King. A special thank you goes out to all of our volunteers.

The project’s evaluations have been highly favorable. 95% of the teachers who responded agreed or strongly agreed that the books were appropriate and high-quality and that they would like to have the volunteers visit again next year.

The following organizations and businesses donated to this project to support the purchase of the books:

  • Alger County Kiwanis
  • B. Dalton Booksellers
  • Business and Professional Women of Marquette
  • Gwinn Sawyer Medical Center
  • Munising Lions
  • Negaunee Lions
  • The Public Enrichment Foundation
  • Rotary Club of Marquette
  • Rotary of Alger County
  • Gordon and Ruth Snyder

Another thank you goes out to all those organizations, businesses, and individuals. Thank you.
