About the U.P. Nonprofit Conference

Ignite The Spark, Fuel Your Mission
Great Lakes Center for Youth Development will provide conference attendees with speakers and workshops chosen to inspire the passion – the Spark. This Spark is what lies behind the work they do and, in turn, fuels the mission of the organizations for which they provide leadership and expertise.  The power of the Spark as a metaphor for passion comes from Search Institute of Minneapolis. Search Institute advocates that by identifying and fueling Sparks – their natural areas of interest or aptitude – in our children, we can help them grow into healthy adults. The idea is easily applied to an organizational level. It disciplines us to work through the lens of our missions. Keeping the mission energized and tapping into the passions of staff, leaders and volunteers can help us make the leap from simply getting our work done to truly enriching our communities. It helps us make good decisions, regardless of whether that decision is to seek a grant to kick off a new program or make a tough decision in response to a sluggish economy.

2011 Keynote Speaker:

Jack Kresnak, president and CEO of Michigan's Children, will be this year's keynote speaker. Through his leadership and the efforts of his team, Michigan's Children has become a recognized leader in the development of public policy impacting children and families. Michigan's Children is a statewide, nonpartisan and nonprofit organization that works with lawmakers, business leaders and communities to create effective public policies to give all Michigan children the opportunity to thrive.

Before Mr. Kresnak joined Michigan's Children, he was a veteran reporter on children's issues for 38 years at the Detroit Free Press. His stories spanned a wide range of issues such child abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency and foster care. Jack's work over the years influenced changes in state laws and policies within state agencies serving vulnerable children.

This year's theme: "Ignite The Spark, Fuel Your Mission" makes Jack Kresnak the perfect choice for keynote speaker. Mr. Kresnak and his "Spark" - advocacy for children - demonstrate the importance of persistence and passion when working to change communities and improve the lives of our citizens.
