About the U.P. Nonprofit Conference

Powerful Missions - Profound Results
The mission-driven your organizations is as important as ever as our world, our country, our state and the U.P. work toward a healthier economy. There is evidence that we are through the worst of the recession - stocks show signs of rally, retail sales have risen, unemployment rates have leveled and are beginning to drop bit by bit. But we're not out of the woods yet. Now comes a different kind of tough time - nonprofit and youth-serving organizations must persevere through the challenging climb to a strong economy. Many people, families and organizations in our communities are still in or on the brink of being in dire situations. As organizations passionate about filling these gaps, it is critical we continue to fuel our missions, focus our work and help deliver the powerful and life-changing results our communities still need. The economic downturn resulted in a lot of cutbacks and closures, but for many, the passion that fuels our missions kept us afloat - we are in it for the long haul. Join us at the 6th Annual U.P. Nonprofit Conference for a day set aside to learn and talk with others about what keeps our passions alive and moves us into the new environment that is taking shape.

2010 Keynote Speaker: Sam Singh

Our keynote speaker for the 6th Annual U.P. Nonprofit Conference is Sam Singh, nonprofit consultant, world traveler and former CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association and mayor of East Lansing. Sam will draw on his knowledge and observations of the Michigan nonprofit sector and his recent world travels to stir up conference attendees and inspire them to take their missions and visions to new heights.

If you don't know who Sam is (or even if you do), take a look at his blog about his travels: www.singharoundtheworld.com/

Pre-Conference Training Session:

Learn about the Michigan Cultural Data Project (Michigan CDP), the first online management tool designed to strengthen arts and cultural organizations. This unique system provides tools to analyze and benchmark financial and organizational data. The Michigan CDP will allow the arts and culture community to better articulate and provide evidence for the sector's assets and needs, as well as its contributions to the state and the country. Organizations will have access to a variety of reports, as one part of the grant application process to participating funders and to make a case to board members, potential donors, advocates and policy makers. This training session will provide an overview of the history and goals of the Michigan CDP, as well as an introduction to the types of data collected. Learn more about the Michigan Cultural Data Project at www.miculturaldata.org.

An associate from the Michigan CDP at the Pew Charitable Trusts and ArtServe Michigan staff will lead a training session at the Peter White Public Library, Thursday, October 21, at 2 p.m. It is a free, pre-conference session of the 6th Annual U.P. Nonprofit Conference. One hour prior to the Michigan CDP Training Session, at 1 p.m., ArtServe Michigan will host an update on the status of arts and arts legislation. More details are available at ArtServe's website, www.ArtServeMichigan.org, on the Regional Meetings page.
