The U.P. Volunteer Network (UPVN) builds the capacity of U.P. organizations to connect citizens with meaningful service opportunities that meet critical community needs. In addition to promoting volunteerism and recognizing volunteers, the Network provides volunteer management training to nonprofits and is the administrator of UPvolunteer.org, which matches volunteers with opportunities to serve.

The Network is led by the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development in collaboration with U.P. 2-1-1, United Way of the Eastern U.P. Volunteer Center, and Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs (RSVP) across the U.P.

To recruit volunteers or to find opportunities to volunteer, visit Upvolunteer.org.

Family Volunteer Day

The Volunteer Coordinators of Marquette County hosted a Family Volunteer Day event at the Westwood Mall in Marquette Nov. 19, 2011. The Great Lakes Center for Youth Development was one of several nonprofit organizations that offered service projects for families to take part in together. Activities ranged from decorating holiday cards for troops to making fleece scarves for the homeless. Volunteering as a family helps strengthen the developmental assets of “positive family communication” “service to others” and “caring” among others.

Anja McBride, 6, of Marquette shows off a holiday card she made with her mother, Lisa McBride, to send to troops overseas thanking them for their service.

Tamrah Verbanac, 7, of Marquette colors a picture to brighten the day of someone in need as her father, Robert Verbanac looks on.

Adam Tavernini, 12, of Marquette makes a holiday card to brighten someone’s day.
