Great Lakes Center for Youth Development in partnership with the YMCA of Marquette County, Girl Scouts of Peninsula Waters, and the Womens Center, pooled resources to purchase a special data cut of the 2002 Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors (PSL: AB) survey. This data cut reflects the Asset Profile, Deficit Behaviors, Thriving Indicators, Substance Use Risk-Taking Behaviors, Risk-Taking Behaviors, and Risk-Taking Behavior patterns of adolescent females. By having access to this data, the local community can study adolescent females by grade and asset levels. By understanding the behaviors, experiences, and perceptions of adolescent females in this way, community mobilization can be more focused to better meet the developmental needs of girls.

This data cut reflects the perceptions and behaviors of 1,149 adolescent females from across Marquette and Alger Counties. The survey population is stratified across the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. Each grade level is reasonably represented with 396, 387, and 364 participating adolescent females respectively. Of the 40 Developmental Assets, local adolescent females have an average of 20.1 assets. Eighth grade females (21.9) have a higher average number of assets than 10th (19.1) and 12th (19.3) grade females. Generally speaking, females tend to have a higher average number of assets than males.

Great Lakes Center for Youth Development is currently putting together a community-based learning team designed to conduct an in-depth look at the state of adolescent females in the community. The group will spend a year together in a co-learning environment and develop a five-year agenda designed to impact all levels of community life for adolescent females from programming to policy.
