-- Congratulations to George Sedlacek (pictured here with his wife, Cindy
Poupore) whowas honored at a celebration held
on December 14 at The Commons in downtown Marquette. George is retiring from the Marquette County Health Department (a GLCYD member) after over 30 years of public health service.
His work in health education and prevention has had a tremendous influence on lives in Marquette County and across the U.P. He has been a great advocate for building Developmental Assets in youth and has provided support to the Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors survey for many years. We at GLCYD have thoroughly enjoyed working with George and are glad that he will remain involved in the community as a volunteer in prevention and health promotion programs. Thanks, George!!! Have fun!!!
-- Thoughts on Asset Building at Christmas (radio clip)
It’s often said that “Christmas is for children,” but what do we, as adults, really mean by that?
If you’re an adult – take a moment to think back to what Christmas was like when you were a child. What are the first things you think of? Most of the time – it’s not specific presents we received – it’s who we were with and the things we did together. Now think about the youth in your life – when they are adults, what kinds of holiday memories do you want them to hold?
Cooking, shopping and decorating are all activities that even very young children can participate in. Using these opportunities to involve youth will teach them important skills and build wonderful memories.
One of the strengths of the 40 Developmental Assets is that all of us who come into contact with youth on a regular basis are asset builders. With a little bit of intentionality – we can build more assets in the youth of our community.
Consider using your talents and abilities to volunteer in the community – this can help your young person learn the importance of helping others and the joy of giving.
