The Marquette and Alger counties region has won a national competition
to be named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People.
(Application of the Marquette &
Alger Counties)
The national competition was held by America’s Promise and launched
by General Colin Powell in May. Being named to this list is a very prestigious
honor.
A distinguished panel of civic, business and nonprofit leaders, including
United Way President Brian Gallagher, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President
Tom Donohue, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala,
baseball great Cal Ripken Jr. and former Denver mayor Wellington Webb,
reviewed the applications and selected the winning communities.
The ultimate goal of the competition is to establish a vision for what
all communities in America can and should be doing to support and nurture
their young people.
