Let’s Grow KI

What is Let’s Grow KI?

Let’s Grow KI! is a program to plant the seeds for a healthier and more self-sustaining community through gardening, nutritional education, and community action. Our pilot-year goal is to enroll 5 young families living in KI Sawyer in a program that provides them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to provide nutritional food for their families by setting them up to grow, prepare, and preserve their own food. We want to do more than just teach people how to fish; we want to show them the best spots and give them the pole, line, and tackle.

How Does This All Work?

We’ll remove the barriers of cost, set-up and time by furnishing each family with the containers, soil, compost and seeds along with the tools required to begin growing and preparing produce at their own homes! Beyond that we’ll be providing the participants with instruction through 12 one-hour workshops between May and October and an online group where they can ask questions, receive feedback, and share with their peers and mentors.

During the great depression in 1942, the US government asked it’s citizens to help support the war effort while supporting themselves, through gardening. People rose up to their patriotic duty and just 2 years later in 1944, Victory Gardens accounted for 40 percent of all the fresh fruits and vegetables consumed in the United States! This last year has highlighted some of the cracks in the current food system, in the Upper Peninsula we import over 90% of our food! We may not have a grocery store here on base, but we do have a lot of land– and where better to revive Victory Gardens than on a decommissioned Air force Base with low access to healthy affordable food?

Your donation will also help to provide classroom materials that we can continue to use toward the mission of teaching more new families every year. Some day the K.I. Sawyer neighborhood could be a self sustained fortress full of gardens, thanks to support from people and organizations like you! All donations are tax deductible. Make checks payable to Grow & Lead with Let’s Grow KI! in the memo. You may also donate online here.
