On Monday, June 1, 2015 over 30 students from Malcolm High School in Sault Ste. Marie accompanied staff from Great Lakes Center for Youth Development and members of local community group Not On Our Watch, NOOW, on a field trip to the United States Coast Guard base – Sector Sault, and Aggressive Manufacturing Innovations, AMI Industries. The trip was designed to showcase two post-high school employment opportunities available to students in the military and skilled trade fields, while also incorporating a service project which gave participants the chance to ‘give back’ to their community.
Students were taken on a tour of the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Sault station where they learned about the many facets of USCG careers. Topics included artillery, Great Lakes water and ice rescues, and the role the USCG plays in Homeland Security – unique to our border town station.
After lunch, the group took to Project Playground where they removed debris from inside the fenced structure as well as the pavilion and grounds.
On the last leg of their trip, students toured AMI Industries, headquartered in Lewiston, MI with a factory located here in Sault Ste. Marie. AMI Industries supplies products to the agriculture, construction, automotive, heavy truck, and marine industries. Their products focus mainly in fluid handling components related to Powertrain and Chassis systems and are shipped globally. Students gained knowledge of what to expect in a factory setting as well as some of the machinery and processes behind the products the company produces.
