What happens when you put 3-5 people that work at nonprofits in the U.P. on the phone to with little to no agenda? Magic. Pure Magic.
A few years ago, we had the idea of creating peer learning circles for nonprofit executive directors in communities across the U.P. In theory, it was a great idea. Coordinating it turned out to be a logistical nightmare, so peer learning circles went on the backburner.
Fast forward to just over a year ago, when I watched an online presentation called “The UnWebinar”. It was a really awesome set up, where people submitted questions that were answered live. It was interactive, engaging, energetic – all the things you want in an online training.
A few months after seeing the UnWebinar, it hit me. What if we did something similar for members? We could have GLCYD members ask questions and we could answer them. We gave that a shot, and realized that there were so many great resources right inside our membership. And with that, the Member Mastermind was born.
During the Member Mastermind, we talk about at least two things, what is going well in your organization, and what is something you may need help with or brainstorming around. If time allows, we also try to discuss specific topics that registrants want to talk about.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect with our first Mastermind call. I didn’t know if people would actually share the things they were struggling with. I was afraid the call would be a lot of dead air. I was blown away, when not only were our members engaged in the call, but they all had similar issues that they were dealing with. We’ve been able to connect nonprofits with each other to compare programming, share resources such as Personal Involvement Plans (PIPs) for board members and peer-to-peer discussion on how to handle different HR issues.
I encourage you to try a Member Mastermind. They have been filling up fast, so we are now offering a facilitated call every month. If the demand keeps growing, we are planning to offer them even more frequently with different topics. I hope you will head over to the events page and register.
